What is there to make of the current antics of Mahmoud Abbas, the erstwhile leader of Fatah and the Palestinian Liberation Organization? Fresh from backing down to Netanyahu, the Israeli PM on the settlements issue, he has now succumbed to pressure from the US to drop his demands that the Goldstone war crimes report be referred to the UN General Assembly for discussion and action. Again, Netanyahu had decreed that consideration of that document meant the end to negotiations with the Palestinians, and the US buckled--getting Abbas to do the same.
There is no question that the Palestinians want their homeland--and there is no question, as well, that the israeli's have no intention of giving one to them. Instead, the Israelis are pushing to create settlements everywhere they can, including Jerusalem, so that the borders they draw and force down the collective PLO and US throat will be so toruous as to make a 'homeland' ridiculous. And you know what? They will get away with it too under the ever-emerging synchophancy of the Obama Administration.
Abbas should bew replaced by someone with a spine--not a terrorist, but someone who will stand up to the bullies that israel and the US have become in the Middle East. The Israelis, at least, won a couple of wars (if we forget Lebanon and Gaza) that give them some claim. The US, however, has gone from semi-honest broker in the region to supplicant at the feet of the Israelis. This needs to stop.
